Shopkins is all the rage with my twin girls of 8, and naturally when their birthday came around, I had to throw them a Shopkins birthday party. Shopkins are cute collectible toys and accessories that has seized the imagination of young girls (and some boys) worldwide. With playful names such as Apple Blossoms, Posh Pear, and Miss Mushy-Moo, the collection is apparently endless because new characters are released each season.
Planning the birthday party for my girls was like taking a road trip; getting there was half the fun. I wanted to do something special for the occasion and deciding on the decorations, activities, and food made the days before the event seem like one big celebration because the girls were so excited and wanted their special characters to take centre stage.
Remember that children’s parties are focused on themes, games, and activities. Let your inner child take over when planning this party. If you are not familiar with Shopkins, the first thing you should do is get acquainted with the characters by watching some of the Shopkins episodes on YouTube. The videos are not lengthy and will give you a thorough grounding of what the collection is all about. I’m pretty sure every mom out there with a Shopkins fan at home already has a pretty good base.
So I went to work designing the supplies I needed for throwing a fun party starting with the printable Shopkins birthday invitations. Here’s how everything turned out.
Shopkins Birthday Table Decor: Foods and Sweet Treats
It all started with the party table – I created a Shopkins mini-mart by setting up a table with colorful baskets filled with treats, personalized water bottles, mini chocolate candy bars, popcorn boxes, pudding jars, cupcakes, lollipops and candy cups. The highlight of that table was “Wishes”, the Shopkins themed birthday cake I baked sitting right in the center!
Everything on that table was Shopkins themed and it was made possible with personalized tags, bottle & candy wrappers, custom toppers, popcorn boxes, and food labels.
The food tents decorated the bulk of my table. I bought a bunch of colored baskets from the dollar store and filled them with all sorts of candy. I used matching Shopkins character in my food tents to represent the content of each basket as you can see with Kooky Cookie label for the cookies, the Le’Quorice tent for colorful liquorice and Melonie Pips for strawberry candy. You are not limited to sweets only as there are also fruity & dairy characters, you can find more than 60 Shopkins food tents in my shop.
The “Cheeky Chocolate” mini Hershey choclate candy bars on the table fit right in as both the size and the wrapping were super cute. “Lolli-Poppins” also had a place on that table by glueing cutouts to my lollipops .
“Little Sipper” – Luckily I found some small red cups at the dollar store filled with candy that I transformed into the Shopkins “Sippa” character.
“Poppy Corn” Boxes – perfect for your popcorn boxes. They’re very easy to assemble and add a nice Shopkins touch to your party table.
Shopkins Cupcakes – I love dressing up cupcakes for a themed birthday. I went with “Cupcake Queen” character in yellow and pink. I had only to bake the cupcakes and prepare the frosting. My girls handled the rest!
Party Pudding – This is another easy treat to complement the theme. I added coloring to separate batches of pudding before they were filled into jars and properly tagged.
I personalized the mini water bottles with a Shopkins themed wrappers with my girls’ names and age.
Last but not least, the Birthday Cake – I baked and decorated a cake inspired from Shopkins character “Wishes”. The center filled with M&Ms was a total surprise to the girls. The cake was covered with fondant icing and themed with all edible hand sculpted details. There are some made-to-order fondant toppers that you can also put on a simple home baked cake, in my case I bought a white one and added the food coloring . It’s pretty simple and should you decide to go with this method just remember to keep them stored in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight/light. The candles on the cake were made of marshmallow twists.
Shopkins Birthday Party Games
It all started with Pizza – You can’t go wrong serving pizza in a party. It’s not messy, it’s easy to clean and the kids love it and we can quickly move on to the fun activities required to entertain a dozen excited girls!
Let’s start with Painting “Googy” Egg – This is a fun activity for the kids as they can paint any pattern they want just like an Easter egg. All it takes is some plain white eggs with different paint colors. To make it more interesting, I had each girl draw 3 colors each. The girls loved the activity especially when it came to painting the yolk oozing out of Googy’s head.
Egg Race: The kids enjoyed the classic egg on the spoon race as they had t0 balance and co-ordinate their egg to win! Avoid messy accidents by making sure the eggs are hard boiled not raw. It also helps to have the race in the backyard as they will be running with their egg on a spoon, skipping and passing it around – egg damage is inevitable.
I was happy to find these Shopkins beads online and did well ordering them weeks in advance as I got them right on time! Making bracelets and necklaces with these beads was another successful activity.
The Jelly Belly BeanBoozled Challenge was the last activity of the day – this is a collection of jelly beans with very special flavors! Each jelly bean color represents two flavors: one good and one bad – as in nasty. This game guarantees hilarious moments for both kids and adults. Just imagine the face of the person hoping for a buttered Popcorn flavored bean which turns out to be Rotten Egg instead!
Shopkins Party Favors
Souvenirs are a must for any party and I had two for each guest.
I went with personalized Shopkins t-shirts for the first party favor. I picked a cute Shopkins design and personalized it with the name of each guest. I bought the colored t-shirts from Walmart and had the design printed on each one. Every girl went home with a t-shirt bearing her name and let me tell you they were a hit. The girls even went to school the next day wearing their Ts!
Last but not least, each girl received a personalized shopping bag. I bought the paper bags straight from a dollar store and tagged each one with a personalized label. The girls went on a shopping spree stuffing their bags with candy from the buffet table.
The party was a success as the girls had a blast. It was exciting to put it all together with my girls and they are already talking about next year’s theme. Planning a themed birthday party like a Shopkins party should be fun and easy. I hope the tips above gave you some ideas. The main thing to remember is that it’s for the kids, you will find that you are less likely to feel stressed out about it if you get them involved in the planning process. My girls couldn’t stop chattering about the party for days after.
